In the traditional section “Literary Guide” - “Half a century without Evelyn Waugh” - a selection of diaries, articles, memoirs of the great author of “Brideshead Revisited” and “A Fistful of Ashes”. Thank God, the readers of “Foreigner” do not need to explain who Evelyn Waugh is. The creator of delightfully funny and at the same time sinister fantasies, in which the realities of the slowly but surely collapsing British Empire were grotesquely refracted, and at the same time reflected the universal laws of human existence, a subtle stylist and a poisonous satirist, he is firmly entrenched in our consciousness as one one of the brightest and most original prose writers of the 20th century, rightfully taking a place among the most prominent representatives of English literature,” writes the compiler and editor of the column, critic and literary critic Nikolai Melnikov in the preface. The selection, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the death of Evelyn Waugh, includes the sections “A Writer Travels” and “I am Writing to You...”. Also full of caustic sarcasm, the travelogue “Stickers on a Suitcase” (translated by Valery Minushin) and a selection of Waugh’s letters (compiled and translated by Alexander Livergant) is a tale of travel to Europe, Africa and South America, as well as the life of British society between the wars. The “Articles, Essays” section is also dedicated to Evelyn Waugh - in the articles “Copper Pipes” (translation by Nikolai Melnikov), “I see only boredom everywhere” (translation by Anna Kurt), “The Man Who Hollywood Hates” about the film “Monsieur Verdoux” C. Chaplin (translation by Anna Kurt) reveals the piercing, deep and merciless mind of the critic, and Evelyn Waugh’s interview with Harvey Bright from the New York Times (translation by Nikolai Melnikov) shows how bright, original and controversial the writer was. In the section “ Nothing funny” is one of the funniest humoresques “The Difficult Art of Giving Interviews” (1948), where in an absurdist manner Evelyn Waugh’s conversation with an annoying, poor English-speaking reporter who entered the narrator’s hotel room is recreated (translation by Anna Kurt). In the traditional section “Among Books” Evelyn Waugh reviews her colleagues: Ernest Hemingway, Graham Greene and Muriel Spark (her novel “The Comforters,” which Waugh writes about, was just published in the October 2015 issue of IL, so the reader has a unique the opportunity to compare your opinion with the opinion of the great writer). In the section “In the Mirror of Criticism”, Evelyn Waugh himself gets the credit from the reviewers. No less distinguished writers Edmund Wilson, George Orwell, Desmond McCarthy, Gore Vidal and Anthony Burgess dissect the work and personality of their colleague literally to the bones - harshly, biasedly and very unexpectedly. All works by Evelyn Waugh and about Evelyn Waugh are illustrated with the writer’s own drawings, who found himself in the bargain In addition to all his talents, he was also a gifted cartoonist, as well as his contemporaries.
