As fate would have it, “Mountain Path” attracted much less attention than the long-suffering “Grozd”. Among those who responded to the publication of the book were Nikolai Gumilyov’s student Vera Lurie and Julius Aikhenvald, who devoted a review to two Sirin collections at once (of which he gave preference to “The Mountain Path”). Both Lurie and Aikhenwald turned out to be more merciful to the aspiring poet than previous reviewers. Noting the shortcomings of V. Sirin’s poetic style, they expressed confidence in his further development and creative growth: “Sirin’s poems do not so much give as they promise. Now they have somehow become overgrown with words—sometimes unnecessary and heavy words; but just as a sculptor does nothing but cut off the excess in a block of marble, so the same process is obligatory for a sculptor of words. It seems that such a road lies ahead for Sirin and that, working on himself, he will achieve valuable creative results and his poetic lengths will be overcome by the poetic laconicism that is already accessible to him, the desired artistic stinginess” (Aikhenvald Yu. // Rul. 1923. 28 January. S. 13).N. Melnikov. “Classic without retouching.”
