The selected works of the Austrian writer Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932) offered to the reader include the novel “Golem” (1915) and short stories, most of which, scattered throughout the periodical press, were not included in any author’s collection and never before in Russian the language was not translated. This collection, undertaken jointly by the publishing houses "Nezavisimaya Gazeta" and "Enigma", has the following goal - to give the reader an adequate translation of "Golem", since, despite the fact that in Russia this unique work was translated twice (in 1922 and in 1992 g.), none of these translations can be considered satisfactory, because not only does it not convey the lexical and stylistic originality of the world-recognized masterpiece of expressionistic prose, but it does not even contain a hint of the most complex hermetic symbolism that was laid down by the author, a member of the whole a number of very famous European and Asian secret societies and orders, the basis of his immortal novel. The article and detailed comments that precede the collection are, in fact, the first attempt at a serious analysis of those hidden and obvious allusions to alchemy, Kabbalah and the occult, which abound in this one of the most profound and mysterious works of world literature.
