Meyrink's prose is esoteric, mysterious, hermetic, associated with occult knowledge, but also satirical, grotesque, bizarre. Moreover, it is laconic, tightly knitted, and does not condescend to be “beautiful.” It is these features that are intended to reflect the new translations presented in this book. The action of the novel “Walpurgis Night”, as well as the action of “The Golem”, takes place in Prague, a fantastic city with its own charisma, its own secrets and fantasies. This is a novel about gloomy forebodings, about the “Walpurgis Night” inside each of us, about evil spirits that are striving for freedom and threatening bloody events. The novel “The Angel of the Western Window” was conceived by Meyrink as a special book, the result of all creativity. This is a book about the immortality of the human spirit. This narrative is filled with echoes of all the prose created earlier. The translations were made specifically for the Azbuka publishing house by V. Fadeev (“Walpurgis Night”) and G. Snezhinskaya (“Angel of the Western Window”). The book is equipped with comments and an article. Translation from German by Vladimir Fadeev, Galina Snezhinskaya. Notes by Vladimir Fadeev, Vera Akhtyrskaya. Design by Vadim Pozhidaev.
