The “Soviet Newspeak” discussed in Benedikt Sarnoff’s book is the official political language of the Soviet era. It was an ideological poison that poisoned the public consciousness, and thereby the consciousness of every member of society. But much more than the poison, the author is interested in the composition of the antidote, thanks to which the inhabitants of our country still did not succumb and ultimately did not succumb to the destructive effects of this poison. The antidote to this was, as the author says, “an anecdote, a ditty, an epigram, a mocking, parodic paraphrase of some official slogan, and, of course, our most powerful weapon, our universal cure for all diseases - the blessed Russian swearing.” It is these heterogeneous elements that formed this “Little Encyclopedia of Real Socialism.”
