The Shop Is Closing (1994) is a sequel to the famous novel Catch-22. The action of the novel is related to our days, the aged heroes are approaching seventy. But they are connected by the memory of the past and the war. Now, when the war seems to young people either a scary fairy tale or an adventure series, for the participants it has become both a memory of their youth and the most powerful experience of their entire lives. Life ends, the shop closes, everything is seen more clearly, and even in that dislocated world that always occupied Heller, things fall into place. And bitter thoughts come about “that everyone in this world has rights, but no one is allowed to use them.”

Автор майстерно передає переживання героїв, які, хоча й постаріли, все ще несуть в собі тягар минулого. Книга сповнена іронії та гіркоти, що робить її читання неймовірно емоційним. Хеллер знову вражає своїм унікальним стилем, змушуючи читача задуматися про те, як війна формує не лише особистість, а й світогляд. Переклад, хоч і виконаний за допомогою штучного інтелекту, в цілому якісний, хоча й є деякі недоліки. Проте це не заважає насолоджуватися глибоким змістом та емоційною наповненістью тексту. Рекомендую цю книгу всім, хто хоче зануритися у світ, де пам'ять і досвід стають основою для розуміння сучасності.
