Bruce Gold, who in the first line of this novel was asked to write a book about life as a Jew in America, asks himself in the last line: “Where to begin?” Gold is disingenuous: he is smart enough and cannot help but understand that he has already become the author (or rather, Heller’s co-author) of the novel “Gold, or As Good as Gold,” which fits between this request and this question. The realities of political life in the United States of the 70s introduced into the novel allowed Heller to subject figures of the modern establishment to scathing criticism, which he did with his characteristic brilliance.

Ця книга стала для мене справжнім відкриттям. Брюс Голд, з його іронічним стилем та глибокими роздумами про життя єврея в Америці, піднімає важливі питання, які залишаються актуальними і сьогодні. Хеллер, як співавтор, вміло вплітає політичні реалії 70-х років у тканину сюжету, що надає твору особливої глибини. Я був вражений тим, як автори зуміли поєднати особисті історії з критикою сучасного істеблішменту, що робить роман не лише цікавим, а й повчальним. Незважаючи на деякі недоліки в перекладі, які не заважають розумінню основної ідеї, я вважаю, що ця книга заслуговує на увагу. Вона спонукає до роздумів про життя, ідентичність та місце людини в суспільстві. Рекомендую всім, хто цінує літературу з глибоким змістом!
