And we are consumed by flames

A person wakes up somewhere unknown - perhaps in a hospital ward, but this is not certain - and does not remember anything about himself at all. “Call me Ishmael,” he suggests to the doctors, whom, for lack of other versions, he names Yuri Zhivago and Madame Bovary. The man painfully remembers what happened to him (some kind of accident? and, it seems, he had love? and should he really be called Ishmael?). He circles around the solution, getting closer and closer to it, like a night moth that circles in the darkness and is doomed to perish in the flames. Meanwhile, another well-informed storyteller, a confused orphaned teenager, like the man himself once was, walks just as cautiously and uncertainly around the man, narrowing his circle. Jaume Cabret (b. 1947) is the biggest star of Catalan literature; his books have been translated into dozens of languages and their circulation exceeds a million copies. His new novel, And We Are Devoured by Fire (his first in ten years after the landmark, award-winning I Confess), is a subtle parable, a paean to literature, and a tense noir: there will be sudden insights, inconsolable grief, true tenderness, murder, amnesia, chases, a mysterious femme fatale, as well as a boar family, without which this story would not have happened at all. For the first time in Russian!
