Based on rich empirical material, the author proposes a typology and reconstructs the chronology of forced migrations in the USSR. In the crumbling of individual operations, he tries to discover a certain system and connection with “related phenomena” (such as the Gulag or planned resettlement), to understand their historical context and geographical logic. The direct and indirect consequences of deportations for modern times - from the general emigration of Germans to local bloodshed in the Caucasus - are also in the field of his attention.
