The members of the Sonderkommando, to whom this book is dedicated, are auxiliary work crews, composed almost exclusively of Jews, whom the Nazis forced to assist themselves in the mass assembly line murder of hundreds of thousands of other people - both Jews and non-Jews. About a hundred people out of two thousand survived, and several dozen of them wrote about their experiences (or gave detailed interviews). But the dead also left behind written evidence, and some of it was discovered after the end of the war in the ground near the Auschwitz-Auschwitz crematorium. The composition of the book is two-part. The first – purely the author’s – is dedicated to the extermination camp itself and the “Sonderkommando” as an unprecedented historical and psychoethical phenomenon. The second is provided to the chroniclers themselves and is an anthology compiled from their works (those parts that could be read and translated).
