Alfred Döblin's (1878-1957) groundbreaking novel Berlin, Alexanderplatz was a huge success in Germany immediately after its publication in 1929. But Franz Biberkopf, whose story the author tells, is by no means one of those who is willingly taken as the main character. A simple hired worker, a lover of women, just released from prison with a vague desire to live honestly and without problems. And now he is free again, in Berlin. There is some kind of whirlwind around him that he doesn’t understand: communists, fascists, bandits, Jews, police... It’s difficult to find income. Our hero looks at everything, adapts, and again looks for a place in the sun. Among other things, he makes acquaintance with a certain Reinhold and takes part in a deal of a fruit merchant - and Franz’s fate again takes a sharp turn... The novel, cinematic in its essence, has been filmed several times. The television epic directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1980) received worldwide recognition.
