Mountains of the Sea and Giants is a visionary novel by Alfred Döblin (1878–1957), written in 1924, and unlike any of the later science fiction novels. It talks about the world war on the territory of the Russian Plain, about the conquest of Icelandic volcanoes and the defrosting of Greenland, about the invasion of prehistoric monsters in Europe and the migrations of ethnically diverse migrant groups in the territory of what is now France... According to Günter Grass, this prose was written “as if under the excessive pressure of the visions falling upon the author.” Moreover, Döblin's book is “an experiment in language and in narrative technique; the text is extreme and unique both for Döblin himself and for the entire history of German literature" (Gabriela Sander), "one of the most unheard of, most outlandish novels of the 20th century" (Klaus Modik). The book is published in Russian for the first time.
