This publication consists of the last two major works of Vladimir Nabokov of the European period, written in Paris before leaving for America in 1940. Both had a decisive influence on all subsequent English-language work of the writer. The story “The Wizard” (1939) is Nabokov’s first attempt to present the theme of “Lolita”, the novel “Solus Rex” (1940) is an approach to the concept of “Pale Fire”. Regretting the incompleteness of Solus Rex, Nabokov noted that “in its coloring, in its stylistic scope and exuberance, in something indefinable in its powerful underlying current, it promised to be decisively different from all my other Russian works.” An excerpt is published in the Appendix from the archival typescript "Solus Rex", excluded from the Paris magazine publication. The publishing layout is preserved in a4.pdf format.
