Plutarch's historical works are entitled "Comparative Lives." These are biographies of prominent historical figures, Greeks and Romans, grouped in pairs, so that in each pair one is a biography of a Greek, the other of a Roman; In each pair, persons are selected between whom there is a similarity in some respect, after each pair a small article is given - “Comparison”, where their similar features are indicated. 23 pairs of such biographies have reached us; in four of them there are no “Comparisons”. These biographies are of great importance for history: many writers from whom Plutarch borrowed information have not reached us, so in some cases he remains the only source for us. In the present, second edition of Comparative Lives (published, unlike the first not in three, but in two volumes) only minor changes were made to the translations of the 1st edition: occasional inaccuracies were corrected, the spelling of proper names was unified, etc.; the general stylistic attitude of S.P. Markish was left the same. All notes, an extensive chronological table and an annotated index of names have been compiled anew.
