William Morris (1834-1896) was an English poet, writer, translator, artist, designer, publisher, inventor and social activist, a truly remarkable mind and an iconic figure of the Victorian era. Morris was one of the first to work in the fantasy genre - at the intersection of the chivalric romance and the fairy tale, and the writer’s banner was later taken up by J.R.R. Tolkien, K.S. Lewis and many other authors. The final volume of Morris's collected works included two late novels, embodying all the writer's artistic achievements, as well as a collection of short stories, Wings of Gold (1856).
