The book brought to the attention of readers is the first study in Russian historiography of the history of the most famous pirate base in the Caribbean - the island of Tortuga. Discovered by Christopher Columbus's expedition in 1492, the island was for a long time a haven for smugglers, pirates and corsairs. Its advantageous strategic position led to increased interest in it from the leading maritime powers of Western Europe - Spain, England and France. For several decades, they waged a bloody struggle among themselves for the possession of Tortuga. The book is written on the basis of rare Spanish, English, French and Dutch sources and may be of interest not only to professional historians, but also to a wide range of readers interested in the romance of sea adventures.
