A new book by historian, marine painter Viktor Gubarev introduces readers to one of the most significant anti-Spanish expeditions of the English corsair and naval commander, the first English circumnavigator Sir Francis Drake (c. 1540–1596). A contemporary and favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, Tudor, her “iron pirate” and business partner, knighted for his military exploits, Drake in 1585-1586 made an unprecedented raid on the shores of Spain, the Cape Verde Islands, the West Indies and Florida. During this campaign, the British destroyed the port of Vigo in Galicia, Portuguese settlements on the island of Santiago, the city of Santo Domingo on Hispaniola (Haiti), the fortified port city of Cartagena in New Granada (now Colombia) and the city of San Augustin on the Florida coast. In fact, Drake's West Indian expedition marked the beginning of the Anglo-Spanish War of 1585–1604.
