The man who opens a book by Gerard Revé for the first time is worthy of envy. Russian readers have yet to penetrate the world of Reve - an alcoholic, a homosexual, a fanatical Catholic, who was put on trial for comparing Christ with his beloved donkey, a paranoid and hysterical, a sadomasochist and an exhibitionist, ready to talk about his highest and lowest desires. Reve turns every second of his life into text, captures the smallest turns of his mood, mixes reality and fantasy, sparing neither himself nor his friends. Gerard Reve was born in 1923, his first novel “Evenings”, published when the author was 23 years old , is recognized as the pinnacle of post-war Dutch literature. The duology about Sweet Boys was written 30 years later, when Revé changed his writing style, turning to a solipsistic monologue, a confession that can only be listened to, but cannot be interrupted.
The cover design uses a still from the film by Paul de Lussacht " Dear boys.”
