"Very often, when I display my relationship with the Lord, He is with me in an intimate relationship that does not exclude sexual contact." Gerard Reve's fantasy of copulating with God, who appeared to him in the form of a young gray donkey, became the basis for the Donkey Trial (1966–1968), the last blasphemy case brought in the Netherlands. The writer defended himself in the courtroom and was acquitted.

The same year that the Donkey Trial began, Reve, surprising many, joined the Roman Catholic Church. The book “God is Very Lonely” contains memoirs, speeches, lectures, articles and letters from Rev, revealing the secrets of revism - sexual acts of punishment dedicated to higher beings and God himself.
