Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) - an outstanding English poet, translator, illustrator and artist, one of the creators of the famous "Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood" - an association of poets who sought to return art to its pre-Raphaelian naive form, to aesthetic perfection and harmony, which especially clearly manifested in the works they produced. The main literary achievement of D.G. Rossetti created the “House of Life” cycle of 101 sonnets, which was created throughout almost the entire career of the poet. Rossetti’s sonnets are marked by vivid illustrative effects and an atmosphere of luxurious beauty. Since almost all sonnets have something in common with Rossetti’s paintings, and many are generally inseparable from their “picturesque counterparts,” this pairing was the basis for the design of the present publications In general, the pictorial series of Rossetti’s paintings (over 150 paintings), presented in a two-volume book, will allow you to get a large-scale idea of the creative path of the British genius. A scientifically commented translation of “The House of Life”, as well as over 60 other poems by Rossetti, which made up the “Additions” section , prepared by the largest domestic specialist in the poet’s work and wonderful translator V.S. Neklyaev (pseudonym Vlanes). The publication is accompanied by detailed articles about the life of Rossetti (V.S. Neklyaev) and the perception of his poetic heritage in Russia (D.N. Zhatkin).
Part of the edition was additionally equipped with a full-color illustrative booklet (212 pp. ). It included, in particular, that significant of Rossetti’s artistic heritage that remained behind outside the two-volume book (paintings, drawings, stained glass, furniture, design works, etc.). The most beautiful and extremely rare original edition of “The House of Life” (Boston, 1881) is reproduced in full, as well as design elements of another (second in aesthetic importance) edition of this collection (Boston, 1894) are reproduced.
