The Time Book of George the Monk, known in scientific and cultural parlance as the "Chronicle of George Amartol" is a monument of ancient Russian writing of the 11th century, recognized as more ancient than the "Tale of Bygone Years" and "The Tale of Igor's Campaign". This is a translated Byzantine “world history”, which begins the count from the “first man” Adam and closes with the dawn of Russian history. It has a strong Christian orientation. It was very popular in Rus' throughout the Middle Ages. Written in Church Slavonic, Russian translation. Preserved in many manuscripts, the oldest is the Tver (Troitsky) face list of the early 14th century. This manuscript is kept in the Russian State Library and is our national treasure. Critical edition by V.M. Istrina 1922-1930 not much more accessible than a unique manuscript. The Russian text of this edition is an attempt to introduce the content of this monument into wider cultural use. The translation was made based on the Trinity manuscript using the method of continuous comparison with the Greek parallel text and commenting on the most striking semantic discrepancies.
