The complete collection of Russian and English stories by the greatest writer of the twentieth century, Vladimir Nabokov, is being published in Russia for the first time. Prepared in 1995 by the writer's son, Dmitry Nabokov, the English volume of Nabokov's short prose is well known in the West. However, the book has not yet been published in Russian, the “unconstrained, rich, infinitely obedient” language in which Nabokov wrote most of his stories. Thanks to many years of work by Nabokov’s researchers, it was possible to collect all sixty-eight stories under one cover, written by him in 1920–1951 in European emigration and America. Many of them became an event during the author’s lifetime and were translated into all major world languages. The book, which the reader holds in his hands, also presents rare and unknown works of the master. The stories “They Speak Russian,” “Sounds” and “Gods,” prepared for publication based on archival texts, are published in Russian for the first time. English stories by Nabokov, published in the best magazines in the USA and foreshadowing the appearance of the novels that made him famous “Lolita”, “Pnin”, “Pale Fire”, in this edition are presented in a new edition of translations by Gennady Barabtarlo. The complete collection of stories is accompanied by a foreword and notes by Dmitry Nabokov, notes by Vladimir Nabokov, and See also editor's notes.
