Georgy Ivanov called the poem “Gurilev’s Romances” “a real and brilliant success” of its author. The author, Vladimir Fedorovich Markov (b. 1920), a graduate of Leningrad University, volunteered for the front in 1941, was wounded, and was captured. Until 1949 he lived in Germany, then in the USA. In 1957-1990 was a professor of Russian literature at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he still lives. Markov happily combines both the gift of a poet and the gift of a researcher of poetry. His works on the history of Russian futurism are most famous. His book “On Freedom in Poetry” (St. Petersburg, 1994) was published in his homeland. As a poet, V. F. Markov published three books in exile: “Poems” (Regensburg 1947), “Gurilev Romances” (Paris, 1960), “ Poetry of “one line”” (Munich, 1983).
