The novel “One Word is Worth a Thousand” (2009) is by far the most famous and titled work of Liu Zhenyun; in 2011 it was awarded the Mao Dun Literary Prize, China’s main literary award. The writer's humorous gift is manifested here on a new plane: the novel is both comical and harsh at the same time, because life itself laughs at the heroes, pushing them into the pursuit of illusory happiness. Liu Zhenyun depicts the great Chinese loneliness: on the steep turns of fate, in a huge sea of people, a person has no one to talk to heart to heart, not even with God. One word is worth a thousand.
