The World War of 1914–1918, which was the highest and most concentrated expression of the imperialist expansion of bourgeois states, pitted various political systems and state organisms against each other. The war produced an unprecedented change in the ideas and life of the masses. It threw the working masses into the arms of nationalism and chauvinism. It led to the collapse of the international labor movement, in order to then revive it to fight for the socialist revolution. This exceptional era was reflected in the literary activity of L. D. Trotsky, which took place during the war in various Western countries. This volume includes articles, feuilletons, essays and correspondence written during this period on issues of world politics and depicting the life of warring Europe. We have grouped all this diverse material into individual countries. Articles relating to France are not included in this volume and will be included in a separate volume, which will be a supplement to this one.
