The materials contained in this volume cover the period from the February Revolution to January 1918. At the beginning of January, the Third Congress of Soviets took place, which, as Lenin put it, completed the first months of consolidating the power of the Soviets. The abundance of material forced the volume to be divided into two parts. The first part ends on October 9th. This date was not chosen by chance. This marks the end of the seven-month period of agitation and organizational work of the party in preparing the working class for the conquest of power. The Petrograd Soviet's authorization of our faction's withdrawal from the Pre-Parliament meant its consent to a direct and immediate struggle for power. It was around this same date that the decision of the Executive Committee of the Petrograd Soviet was made on the creation of the Military Revolutionary Committee, a body leading the masses in the direct struggle for power. All the activities of our party in the days following October 9th take place under the sign of direct preparation for the uprising.
