“I have focused all my life’s interest on obtaining pleasure and will not apologize for this to anyone.” Two stories by Marcel Jouandeau (1888–1979), whom Nikolai Berdyaev called “the most remarkable and thoughtful writer of modern France.” During Juando’s lifetime, they were published anonymously, in collector’s editions, and were reprinted with attribution only in 1988. In “The Secret Journey” (1949) Juando talks about an unstable road romance, in “Tiresias” (1954) - about the pleasures of passive love. “With a crown of shame on my brow, I do not mention my inverted insides - agitated, swollen, boiling, overflowing , irritated and restless, as if I had given birth to a Dragon or Hercules. Who is their father? Of course, Zeus.”
