The book by Peter Esterhazy (b. 1950) “Harmonia cælestis” (“Heavenly Harmony”) came as a real surprise to many readers. “712 pages of concentrated pleasure”, “a miracle of the impossible” - such assessments were heard in the Hungarian press. This book is primarily about my father. But if in its first part, where the “father” appears as a collective image, a supra-historical view, a “heavenly” register, dominates, then in the second - earthly specifics. Taken together, both parts of the novel are the mystery of a family that has known heaven and hell over the centuries, high aspirations and misfortunes that befell one of the most famous Hungarian families. The book as a whole is a product of artistic imagination, containing true events from the history of Europe and the Esterhazy family history of the last four hundred years, a grandiose literary opus that encourages reflection on the fate of the novel as a genre. Since its publication (2000), the novel has been translated into eighteen languages and has repeatedly given rise to authoritative literary critics mentioning the author's name as a possible contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
