Emperor Alexander I (1777-1825), who reigned in Russia since 1801, is one of the most mysterious figures in Russian history. Probably, no other sovereign has had so many contradictory opinions expressed by compatriots and foreigners, contemporaries and current researchers - for everyone he remained an unsolved Sphinx. The famous writer Henri Troyat, creator of the famous series of biographies of Russian autocrats from Ivan the Terrible to Nicholas II, in his book, published in 1980 in France by the Flammarion publishing house, tries to unravel the mystery of this Sphinx.
