Charles Bukowski is one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century, the author of more than forty books, including novels, poetry, essays and short stories. Despite the sometimes shocking naturalism, his texts are full of lyricism, even a kind of sentimentality. “The South without Signs of the North” is the last collection of Bukowski’s short prose during his lifetime. In these stories, the figure of the narrator, a drunk and a womanizer, is partly autobiographical and evokes in the Russian reader inevitable associations with another extremely popular writer - Sergei Dovlatov.
