In the summer of 1941, the Italian writer and journalist Curzio Malaparti, as a war correspondent, covered the events taking place on the Eastern Front. He talked about how soldiers were trained for battle, described the most brutal battles, presented the everyday side of a soldier’s life and the suffering of a civilian whose home was broken into by war. The author's testimony was so honest and unbiased that he was accused of sympathizing with communist Russia. And Malaparti, by his own admission, with his reports only sought to present an objective panorama of front-line life, showing all the horror and absurdity of the war, which, however, did not prevent him from giving a personal assessment of the events taking place before his eyes.
