Volume 5 (book 1) continues to acquaint the reader with prose translations of Sergei Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1908–1977), prose writer, poet, playwright, literary critic, philosopher, of which the most voluminous and from an artistic point of view the most significant is “Kaput” Curzio Malaparte about the Second World War (published in its entirety for the first time), a unique work of its kind, interpreted by the author in the context of general Christian values. These are the memoirs of a writer who, as an Italian war correspondent, traveled all over Europe: he found himself on both the Eastern and Finnish fronts, he was received in the royal houses of Sweden and Italy, he talked with the Reich generals in occupied Poland, saw Jewish ghettos, pogroms in Moldova ; he talks about the miraculous icon of the Black Virgin in Częstochowa, about a haunted house in Finland and about many historical facts unknown to the reader. The author reveals the essence of fascism. Despite the tragic, cruel reality of the events described, the translation is often perceived as poetry in prose - it is so refined and aesthetic. This aesthetics is complemented by two fragmentary translations: from Marcel Proust’s “The Captive” and Edmond de Goncourt’s “Hokusai” (about an outstanding Japanese artist), and the third - the first chapters of "The Citadel" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery - ideologically completes the entire connected cycle of translations of foreign prose of the great writer of the 20th century. The volume ends with the unique "Dictionary of Neologisms" compiled by S. N. Tolstoy - from Trediakovsky to his contemporary poets, work on which was carried out during the last years of his life, until the mid-70s.
