Based on some vagueness inherent in terminology related to the sphere of morality, an attempt has been made to understand how what is hidden behind such a fundamental term as “soul” arose. To do this, we examined such concepts as suffering and compassion, good and evil, dissatisfaction and alienation. Their involvement in the process of formation of morality in society is revealed. On the basis of this, a division was made between the concepts of mental and spiritual, soul and spirit. The fundamental role of dissatisfaction in the formation of cultural and practical activities in society is shown. Dissatisfaction is divided into three categories: physiological, mental and aesthetic, and the characteristics of each of them are given. It is concluded that initially the emotional movements of the psyche are derivatives of our alienation from the social environment and are the result of the desire to overcome this alienation and merge with it (society) and with what is valuable to it.
