This time the renowned German playwright turns to Vladislav Ozerov's classic Russian play "Dmitry Donskoy" from 1807. The play takes place in the Russian camp on the Don, where Dmitry, Prince of Moscow, gathers the forces of four principalities to finally oppose the will of the Tatar-Mongols. And so, shortly before the decisive battle, Nina, the widow of Prince Vladimirsky, promised by her dying husband to Prince Tver, but in love with the Prince of Moscow, arrives with her army at the camp. This is how a classicist conflict between duty and personal feelings is born in the play, and in this struggle between two contenders for the hand of the ruler of Vladimir, the main, historical goal for which they all gathered is under threat. Peter Hax is a German playwright, poet and essayist. In the 60s he became the founder of socialist classicism and was considered one of the most significant playwrights of the GDR. For a long time, Hax was the only modern writer whose works were staged on the theatrical stage not only in the GDR, but also in the Federal Republic of Germany. Hax gained worldwide fame from his play “A Conversation in the Stein Family about the Absent Herr von Goethe.” Translation: Ella Vengerova
