Hokku is one of the national poetic forms in Japan. It is a tercet, which became a serious genre at the beginning of the 16th century. This collection consisted of haiku only from the late Middle Ages: from Basho to Issa. This period was marked by a rapprochement with painting, an expansion of themes: from landscape, civil lyrics to comical, as well as subjects close to folk tales. The book opens with a foreword by Vera Markova, whose translations were recognized as the best and awarded a medal in the Land of the Rising Sun itself.
