Alexander Stesin (b. 1978) is a Russian poet living in New York. An oncologist by profession, he changed many places of residence, published in Russian and foreign magazines (“Foreign Literature”, “New World”, “Znamya”, “October”, “Zvezda”, “Interpoetry”, “New Journal”, “Snob”, etc.), published three books of poetry. Several years ago, of his own free will, Stesin went to work as the only doctor in a village in Ghana. This great African journey, from preparation to aftermath, is recounted in two stories included in the book Come Back and Take It. A modern doctor in Ghana finds himself in conditions similar to those that inspired Bulgakov’s Notes of a Young Doctor a hundred years ago—and copes with difficulties without losing his sense of humor, prudence and talent. The book includes Stesin's translations from modern Ghanaian poetry.
