Once a Chinese friend of mine said that he really likes to read the poems of Pu-hsi-jin (Chinese: 普希金, Pushkin). And he began to recite something in Chinese, similar to the poetry of Li Bai. And it turned out to be “Winter Evening”. It was at that moment that the idea of this book was born. How very different is the perception of poetry and any other abstract and highly figurative texts in translations in different languages. But how can we show this to a reader who does not speak a foreign language? We will go the opposite way. To begin with, we will translate Pushkin’s poems translated into Chinese back into Russian. What will happen then? Will they be at all similar to the original? Now we’ll find out.
