In that distant and glorious 18th century, when Europe was drowning in the blood of endless wars, ordinary soldiers no longer went to their deaths for their Fatherland, but for their king or emperor. Therefore, the transition from one army to another was not considered a special betrayal. Quite a few foreigners served in the Russian army of the Great Peter I, including Swedes, not to mention Saxons or Poles. This story is not only about the Northern War itself, which lasted more than twenty years, but also about two Saxon brothers, Friedrich and Ludwig, who, by the will of fate, first served in the army of the Swedish king Charles XII, then went over to the side of the Russian Tsar, and killed their own former military comrades. These are the everyday life of those times and those wars.
