This story is about the first land battle in the Russo-Japanese War, known as the “Battle on the Yalu River” or as the “Battle of Tyurenchen”. Today it is the border between North Korea and China. Then, at the beginning of the twentieth century, there was the border between Manchuria (the territory claimed by the Russian Empire) and Korea (the territory claimed by Japan). The Russian army lost this first battle, like all subsequent battles, just as it lost the war itself. But this battle remained in history thanks to the 11th East Siberian Rifle Regiment, which broke out of encirclement with a bayonet attack. The hero of this attack was the regimental priest Stefan Shcherbakov, who with his courage three times raised the regiment to break through.
