Tumanyan deeply understood the truth that in art the national and the universal are closely interconnected, and that only by depicting the life and national character of the native people can one express thoughts and ideals that will be close and understandable to all peoples. The poet himself said: “The closer a writer is to his people, the more he delves into their folklore, the greater his greatness, the greater the universal significance of his work.” Tumanyan's creative principles are most fully represented in poems and ballads. The poem “Loretsi Sako” depicts an Armenian patriarchal village with its own foundations, customs and social contradictions.
