In the spring of 1945, German troops carried out the last major offensive operation called “Spring Awakening” in the area of Lake Balaton. Timely countermeasures by the Soviet troops did not allow the Germans to achieve serious success. However, over the course of a week and a half of continuous fighting, the German troops battered the Russians quite badly, almost disrupting their attack on Vienna. And, of course, the success or failure of operations depended not only on the wisdom of the command, but primarily on the actions of soldiers and officers on the front line, face to face with the enemy, who could sometimes unexpectedly become a comrade in misfortune... Famous German writer-historian Michel Gaven, in his new novel, offers a completely different look at those ancient events, and above all through the eyes of their direct participant, military doctor Maren von Coburg.

Книга "Балатонський гамбіт" від Міхеля Гавена пропонує читачеві унікальний погляд на події Другої світової війни, які відбувалися навесні 1945 року. Автор майстерно поєднує факти з художнім описом, що дозволяє зануритися в атмосферу тих буремних часів. Через призму військового лікаря Марена фон Кобурга ми бачимо не лише жорстокість війни, але й людські переживання, страхи та надії. Гавен вміло передає емоції персонажів, що робить їх близькими та зрозумілими. Читачі можуть відчути напругу боїв, але також і моменти людяності, коли ворог стає товаришем у нещасті. Незважаючи на деякі недоліки в перекладі, які незначно впливають на загальне сприйняття, книга залишає глибоке враження і спонукає до роздумів про війну, дружбу та жертви.
