The comedy premiered on February 14, 1895 at London's St. James's Theatre. First edition - London, 1899. The title of the comedy, like its plot, is based on a play on words: the name “Ernest” in English has the same sound as the word “earnest” (“serious”). The title thus has two meanings: “The importance of being serious” and “The importance of being Ernest.”
