James Stevens has repeatedly stated that he wants to give Ireland a new mythology designed to replace the “worn” Greco-Roman myths. His masterpiece, The Pot of Gold (1912), is both a burlesque tale of leprechauns, Irish deities and philosophy and an ironic commentary on Irish culture and politics of the time. The novel won the Polignac Prize for 1912 and is a classic of English-language literature.
