Having survived the horrors of Bolshevik evil, I. Ilyin tries to comprehend the idea of evil and justify the fight against evil in his book “On Resistance to Evil by Force”, and he comes to a very sharp conclusion: “Physical suppression and coercion can be a direct religious and patriotic duty person, and then he has no right to evade them. The fulfillment of this duty leads him as a participant in the great historical battle between the servants of God and the forces of hell.” The epigraph to the book is the Gospel text about Christ’s expulsion of the merchants from the temple: the angry, scourging Christ is apparently closest to the author’s heart. This one-sided, condensedly menacing understanding of Christianity represents, of course, the same sectarian deviation as the widespread “pink” and many other deviations: but who can rightfully claim that he sees the dazzlingly bright sun of Christianity itself, and not just one of its aspects? The tone makes not only music, but also philosophy and journalism: the tone of all writings and especially the speeches of I. A. Ilyin, invariably cheerful and invigorating, calling not only to fight evil, but also to build a new, better life. The source of this tone is genuine love for one’s native people and deep religious faith in life.
