Alexandre Dumas's first novel, Captain Paul, is dedicated to the very popular sailor of the late 18th century, the founder of the American Navy, John Paul Jones. John Paul Jones was such a popular figure in France and the surrounding area at the beginning of the 19th century that there was simply no point in retelling his story in detail for the author. The American corsair Jones, perhaps the only victor of the English at sea for a whole century, was so popular that he became not only the hero of Fenimore Cooper’s novel “The Pilot”, a play and novel by Dumas, but also the hero of English ballads and Dutch folk songs, which are sung by this day. “The Adventures of John Davis” seems to have been written by another person. The author describes in such detail the details of the ship life of the English navy, he is so knowledgeable about them, as if he himself served as a midshipman on His (Her) Majesty’s ship. The descriptions of the morals of the English nobles in their family castles are full of light and kind irony, as if they were written by William Thackeray himself and these pages were only accidentally included in his “Vanity Fair”. This novel exemplifies Dumas’s “creative method” in the best possible way, according to which he worked with his co-authors, leaving behind only dialogues, juicy details, episodes that enliven the narrative, and - what is very important! - the last two chapters of the novel.

The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program. For the most part, the translation of the text is of very high quality, but in some cases, due to the imperfection of the technology, there may be incorrect phrase translations in the text, as well as single words and expressions may not be translated.
