The adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas (1849), based on true historical facts, tells the story of the events preceding the Great French Revolution, the last years of the reign of Louis XV - the beginning of the reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. At the center of the novel is the image of the mysterious Count Cagliostro (aka Joseph Balsamo), the Grand Master who leads the hidden forces of French society. This is the first novel in the Doctor's Notes series, which includes The Queen's Necklace, Ange Pitou, and The Countess de Charny.
