The method of narration, the richness of the language and magnificent endings ensured Sienkiewicz an honorable place in the history of Polish literature, and numerous translations brought him worldwide popularity. But his historical novels brought him to the pinnacle of fame. In 1883-86. He published fragments in the newspaper “Slovo” of the novels “With Fire and Sword,” “The Flood,” and “Pan Volodyevsky,” which were part of the famous trilogy. We will also find the interweaving of adventures and love stories in the novel “The Crusaders,” published in Tygodnik Ilustrowany, 1897-1900. The plot takes place at the royal court and in the estates of nobles, in monasteries and on the road, in the forest and in the crusader castle in the city of Szczytno. Among the historical characters that appear in the book are King Jagiello and Queen Jadwiga. The main character is the young and hot-tempered knight Zbyszko from Bogdaniec. The historical background is a growing conflict with the Teutonic Order, greedy and ready to justify any crime allegedly committed in the name of Christ. The historical novel that brought the writer his greatest success, that is, the Nobel Prize in Literature (1905), was the book “Quo vadis”, published in the “Gazeta Polska” in 1895-96. Sienkiewicz presented in it Rome under Caesar Nero with all its luxury, sybaritism and high intellectual culture. In this pagan world, a new Christian world is born in secret.
