One of the most famous books of the 20th century. A book in which the realism of the traditional southern prose of a “family drama” frames the endless stylistically innovative discoveries of the author... The title of the novel goes back to the biblical legend about King David and his sons Absalom and Amn. Absalom killed his brother because he had dishonored their sister Tamar. Forgiven by his father, he rebelled against him, but was killed by David’s slaves when, in battle, he “got his hair entangled in the branches of an oak tree and hung between heaven and earth.” Upon learning of the death of his son, King David “went to the upper room above the gate and wept, and as he walked, he said: My son Absalom! my son, my son Absalom! Oh, who would let me die instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!... And the victory of that day turned into mourning for the whole people; for the people heard that day and said that the king was grieving for his son.... And the king covered his face and cried out loudly: my son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son!”
