When preparing the translation and editing of Martin Cruz Smith's novel "Gorky Park", the editors tried, if possible, not to deviate from the author's text, despite the mass of inaccuracies and factual errors made by the author. This primarily concerns his knowledge of the geography of Moscow (even if you wanted to, you can’t see either the Donskoy Monastery or the Ministry of Defense from Gorky Park), Soviet jurisprudence (there were no investigators in the CPSU Central Committee, the prosecutor’s office is not directly involved in monitoring the implementation of government decisions, and prosecutors are not wear uniforms with general's shoulder straps on their shoulders), and finally, the everyday realities of Soviet life (it’s hard to believe that an investigator would be addressed simply by his position, without the obligatory addition of “comrade”). Of course, the reader himself will easily notice all these flaws, but we considered it ours it is our duty to warn about them.
