Автор майстерно створює атмосферу, наповнену деталями, які дозволяють відчути дух епохи: дирижаблі, паровози та фабрики, що димлять, створюють яскраву картину життя в столиці Другої Імперії. Сюжет розгортається навколо Леопольда Орсо, який, будучи "сяючим", відчуває зміни, що насуваються на місто. Його внутрішня боротьба між минулим і прагненням до нових горизонтів робить його персонажем, з яким легко співпереживати. Хоча переклад тексту не завжди ідеальний, це не заважає насолоджуватися глибокими темами, які піднімаються в книзі: боротьба між традицією та прогресом, магією та механікою.
